I saw the idea for these in an exclusive little shop in Santa Rosa one day when I was browsing with my friend Katherine Lancina. You can't tell from the picture here, but these are only about 10 x 10 inches - maybe a little smaller. After that, I heard they were called tag blankets, or taggies. Looking them up online, there are all kinds of sites that sell these. When Johnathan was little, he loved to rub on little tags or silky pieces of fabrics when he was needing to be comforted. And I know lots of babies and toddlers do the same thing. I once read something somewhere that indicated that babies do this because that silky feel is what they remember from the womb before they were born...interesting theory, isn't it. So, I knew these would be the perfect little baby gifts and decided I'd be able to make one pretty easily. The blue fabric you see is called "minky" and it is the very softest fabric ever. The stripe is a soft flannel, so they were perfect for this little tag blanket - with lots of little ribbon pieces completing it. If you make one, just be sure to double stitch the ribbons into the seam so they won't pull out. I hope the little babies I made these for get lots of enjoyment out of them !
I made one of these for Ema and for her cousin Cristian and both LOVE them! Such a perfect gift.
