A Night In Bethlehem - Dec 09

Our Lakeport Ward Christmas Party was a Night In Bethlehem. Everyone was asked to come dressed in period costume and we met first in the Chapel for a brief program. From there, we went thru the foyer and "paid our taxes" at the tax collectors booth you see here (as it was being assembled). The tax required was one can of canned food per person which would later be donated to the local food shelter.
As we entered the "city of Bethlehem", there were market booths where we could "purchase" our dinner.
This was the door to the Inn at which Joseph and Mary would inquire of a place to stay.
Holly Green and her children, Carly and Will were dressed in the look of the period. Holly is the artist who created this free standing door for the program. It was just amazing how she constructed this and painted it to look so authentic. She even had some moss growing between the "stones".
The table decorations were simple but very beautiful.
The Meat Market and Fresh Market Stalls -- at the meat market we were served roasted chicken and the Fresh Market we were given baked apples and other goodies.

Notice the live chicken at the back of the meat market...

The fresh market showed a wonderful display of foodstuffs.
Close up of the pasteries market display.
The pasteries offered for our desserts - apple and cherry tarts and cookies.
Close up of the bakery stall - note the sacks of flour and sugar...
At the bakery stall we were served stuffing and rolls.
A view of the pastry and bakery market stalls. Everyone did a wonderful job of decorating their stalls for this production and I think the celebration of Christ's birth was a fun evening for the ward. It gave us a chance to really think of the way that night in Bethelem was at the time of Jesus' birth and the feelings that might have been experienced on that occasion. At the end of our mealtime, a couple from the ward protrayed Joseph and Mary and wandered thru the "city" looking for a place to stay..and at inquiring at the Door of the Inn, they were turned away. From there, certain members of the ward inacted the scene at the stable where Christ was born and the shepherds saw the star and the 3 wisemen arrived with their gifts to the newborn.
